First Date Success Story...Kinda

Tonight I'm linking up with Hallie and Halie at From Firsts to Lasts!

The only reason I would consider the first date Steven and I had a success is because he actually talked to me after this day and we are still together now. Other than that, it was probably the worst first date ever.

Bubs and I had been talking back and forth for a little while before we actually went on our first date. It was the summer before our junior year of high school, and Steven asked me to go bike riding with him. No guy had ever asked me to do something outdoorsy like this for a date before so I was really excited (and nervous because it was August and blazing hot and who wants to sweat in front of the guy they have a slight obsession with?! The whole panting, sweating, red faced look isn't all that flattering on me, believe it or not. I don't glow like all the people in the movies- I look like I got run over by a truck).

He came to pick me up, put my bike in the car and drove to the place we were going to be biking. We got there and it was a baseball field with a parking lot up looking over this valley type thing. Okay, kinda weird I thought but I'll go with it. Oh no, we weren't going to be taking a leisurely ride around the parking lot, we were venturing into the fricken valley. Apparently I give cute boys the impression that I am an experienced mountain biker for whatever reason.

I was insanely apprehensive about flinging myself off the cliff while riding a bike (I couldn't have even hiked down this mountain let alone ride a bike), but I had to impress this guy, so of course I acted like I did this all the time. We started going down the steep steep steep steep...did I mention steep? and narrow trail that had thorny bushes on one side and pretty much a cliff that dropped off about 8 feet on the other. Steven took off like he was in the X games while I rode the breaks the entire time praying that this wasn't my last day on earth. I couldn't control how fast I was going even while holding down the breaks, so when I hit a root and rode out of control, I had a choice to make. Ride off the cliff and possibly die, or land in the soft, gentle thorns. I chose the thorns.

So off I went into the thorny abyss, screaming my head off. Landing right on top of an unforgiving bush, my bike sliding down the hill on its side. Bubs stopped, jumped off his bike and started sprinting up the hill while I was laughing and crying at the same time because I was so embarrassed. I got up out of the bushes, bleeding and covered in dirt with thorns sticking out from my legs, arms, and neck. I started pulling them out of my skin which only made me bleed even more. Steven asked if I was okay and said that he'd carry my bike for me. What a charmer, right? So, I started walking up the hill back towards the car. Then, he asked me where I was going because apparently, we hadn't had enough fun yet! Yes, we actually continued on this hellish bike ride.

Once we got to the bottom of the hill (after Bubs carried both of our bikes down and did not struggle in the slightest) the rest of the ride wasn't that bad, until I slipped on a rock while we were crossing a stream and got both my shoes wet as S hopped along carrying two bikes. Life isn't fair, is it?

When we finally got back to my house, I was getting us drinks out of the refrigerator and Bubs told me that I still had thorns stuck on my back. It never ends, does it? When I was finally thorn-free, we sat on the couch, talked and laughed about how awful the date was. Steven must have thought otherwise because when I was walking him out to his car, he asked me if he could see me the next day...and at that moment I knew he was a keeper.

And we lived happily ever after...The End.

  2. It's an entertaining story, at least! And you can look back on it laughing and enjoy the memory because he was still interested.
